This post and a few to follow are inspired by Shawn Achor and his TED presentation on the Happy secret to better work.
I am grateful for the relationship I have with my wife. Yes, I have already listed my wife in a past “grateful” post but she deserves more. You see today, September 27th, is our anniversary and this year marks 12 years that we have shared our lives together. Why do I say I am grateful for our “relationship”? You could easily say that my wife and I have been through the same rough waters that plaque other marriages but for us it is different. Why is it different? Because the rough times happened to us, we were the ones going through it. And it is through these rough times that cause the great times to be even greater. The sweet just isn’t as sweet without the sour.
I am grateful for my brother. It saddens me that me and my brother don’t have a close relationship. It is not that we do not like each other. We just don’t live close and we both have very busy lives. But I always admire the time he puts in with his kids. My brother coaches for teams that his kids are on and helps train them to be the best at their sport. I love my brother and I really need to take the time to tell him that more often.
I am grateful for the town I live in. The population of Bartlesville is around 37,000 and we have just about everything you need to survive. A mall, a movie theater, a super Walmart, a handful of chain and local restaurants. Sometimes I get frustrated because at times I can’t find certain items in our stores but I gotta admit that I love that everything in this town is only a 15 minute drive away. There has been some excitement here in town as a couple of big stars have been here to film movies. A couple of years ago we had Ben Affleck here for the movie To The Wonder and right now we have George Clooney, Meryl Streep, and Julia Roberts filming August: Osage County.
Today I ran 5 miles. My legs were a little sore from yesterday’s Crossfit workout of the day but I am feeling more confident about my training for my first marathon coming up in November.
Ok, the meditation thing is becoming the most challenging part of my happiness experiment. I tried that Meditation app again last night while I laid in bed next to my wife. She said that it only took about 10 minutes and I was snoring. I need to work on meditating and not just falling asleep.
For my random act of kindness I will give out at least 10 compliments tomorrow at work. I will take notice of something positive about 10 people, their outfit, their hair, their attitude, just something to make them feel good about themselves. I will have to report back on this one to you guys for sure.
